On the four-year anniversary of the fatal drive-by shooting of 21-year-old Estephan Hernandez, Los Angeles Sheriffs detectives and family of the victim made a plea to the public during a media briefing Tuesday morning in Compton for information regarding the shooting.
A small memorial had taken form on the curb right outside Compton Adult School where Hernandez had been struck by multiple rounds of gunfire, detectives said. Candles and flowers were on the ground adorning pictures of the victim as detectives and members of the family spoke to the media.
Investigators say they have hit a “crossroads” in regard to any information that could carry the case forward, which prompted them to once again offer the reward, Lieutenant Brian Dean said.
“That $10,000 reward is for anybody that has information that can lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects involved in this heinous crime,” Dean said.

Few details were presented Tuesday other than what officials had previously shared when the shooting took place on Sept. 2, 2017.
The night of the shooting, authorities said Hernandez and a female friend were sitting in his parked car at the 1100 block of East 148th Street having a conversation. A vehicle only described as a black sedan driving westbound stopped and fired several rounds striking the vehicle, Hernandez and the other person in the car, deputies said.
Detectives said Hernandez had no gang affiliations and were not sure if he was targeted intentionally or by mistake.
“Hernandez’ windows pretty tinted, so they would have to know his vehicle,” Dean said. “So, unknown if this was a random act or if he was specifically targeted maybe because they knew his vehicle.”
Dean mentioned that there had been “a lot of shootings in this area,” but that he was not sure if that was connected.
Lydia Gonzalez, Hernandez’ mother, said she hopes no other mother experiences what she has been through the last four years.
“We do this every year to remember our son,” Gonzalez said in Spanish as pictures of her son stood behind her. “Please, to all the people that know something, please say something—don’t stay silent.”
Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
