Local non-profit organization Children Today, which provides necessary care and services to Long Beach children experiencing homelessness, held their inaugural Children Today 5k on the Pacific Coast Campus of Long Beach City College on Saturday. More than 320 runners and walkers turned out in support, and officials estimate that between $30,000-$40,000 was raised. Proceeds benefited the organization and the event preceded LBCC’s annual Reggae Fest. All photos of the event below are by Andrew Veis.

On a slightly larger scale in both participants and distance, the 25th annual Long Beach Marathon was held on Sunday, sponsored by International City Bank and featuring an ocean view during 80% of the course. Supporters lined the streets to support runners down Ocean Boulevard, through Belmont Shore and into the campus of Long Beach State before they headed back downtown for the finish. The Press-Telegram today reports that more than 22,000 runners participated in the marathon and half-marathon – the event’s largest total ever – and that some hopeful runners were turned away due to full capacity.

Here’s to staying in running shape, Long Beach!
