After a surprising 0-2 start, with losses to Millikan and Poly, the Wilson Bruins (predicted by most to be a top-two finisher) found themselves in an odd situation yesterday, hosting the Cabrillo Jaguars in a must-win match. But, sparked by their two most reliable players, they did what they had to, and came away with a 66-53 victory.
Mike Wilder scored 26 points, hit four shots from behind the arc, was 6-6 from the foul line, and grabbed ten boards. “He’s a nice guy to have on this side,” said Wilson coach Matt Michelson of Wilder.
The Bruins’ big man in the middle Joel Bitonio may have been a bigger difference-maker, however, with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Cabrillo is very athletic, but ultimately had nobody stop Bitonio. “We won because of the inside game,” said Michelson. Cabrillo now drops to 0-2 in league while the Bruins improve to 1-2. The Jags play at Millikan on Wednesday, and Wilson will have a bye until they face Jordan on Friday, on the road in what could amount to another must-win contest.
