As the city gears up for the Long Beach State home openers in the ‘Myd over the next two weekends, the LBCC squads have already gotten their seasons under way. Unfortunately, both the men’s and women’s teams lost their openers.
Men’s
The men’s team was in Fullerton in the Hornet’s Nest, taking on, you guessed it, the Fullerton Hornets. Unfortunately, the Vikings were stung into submission, led by Fullerton’s forward Mike Cox, who posted a double-double with cheese, notching 17 points and 11 rebounds, plus four blocks. Guards Paul Taylor and Lavell McDade followed for Fullerton, with 11 and 13 points, respectively. Leaders for the Vikings were Andrew Gabellieri and Tyler Mitchell, who chipped in 16 and 13 points off the bench. The Vikings fell 73-67, and are now 0-1 on the season. The Vikings will travel to the Irvine Valley Tournament this weekend before hosting their home opener next Saturday, November 22nd.
Women’s
The women’s team had a harder time, losing their first two games of the season by a combined score of 139-61, as they lost two games at the Santa Barbara City College MTXE Tourney over the weekend. In their first game, they lost 75-39 to Orange Coast College, who were ranked number 11 in the state in a preseason poll—they shot 50% and were led in scoring by Aysha Lyons, with 11. The next day they lost to Moorpark College by a score of 64-22. They play Fullerton this evening in a nonconference game, and will open their home schedule this Saturday at 5:30pm.
