There’s a lot of anticipation surrounding this year’s LBSU women’s bball team—tonight at 5pm, fans will get their first chance to see the ‘Niners in action.  And if you’re saying to yourself, “A first practice isn’t exactly ‘action,’ then you haven’t seen a Jody Wynn practice.  The open practice will be held in the Gold Mine tonight at 5pm.

Wynn, who spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at USC, was hired as LBSU’s sixth head coach in April.

During her stint with the Trojans, Wynn was in charge of bringing in four nationally ranked recruiting classes, including the top-ranked group in 2006. On the court, she coached seven All-Pac 10 performers, a conference freshman of the year and a WNBA draft pick.

Prior to USC, Wynn was an assistant at Pepperdine where she helped lead the Waves to six postseason appearances and four West Coast Conference championships.

Wynn is looking to turn around a 49er program that went 8-21 last year. LBSU returns 11 letterwinners from that squad, including All-Big West performers, Whitney Fields (second team), Lauren Sims (honorable mention) and Adelle Walton (all-freshman team).

Also back for her senior season is three-time all-conference selection Karina Figueroa, who redshirted the 2008-09 campaign. Figueroa ranks among the 49er career leaders in 3-point field goals made and attempted, and is just 16 points away from becoming Long Beach State’s 21st 1,000-point scorer.

The Beach opens non-conference action at the Walter Pyramid on Nov. 13 when it entertains Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m.
