The Tarbabes take to the road to face San Diego Hoover in a second-round state playoff game tonight, hoping to advance to the quarterfinals with a minor upset. Compton, we assume you know by now—they’ll get as far as the trio of Cliff Sims, Anthony January, and Allan Guei will take them. No trio of players in the tournament are averaging a higher percentage of their team’s total than those three.
The Cardinals are a young team with less experience than Compton has, particularly from players like Sims, who have a full season of playoff games under their belt at this point; Sims also played with current Raptors star Demar Derozan.
The biggest matchup problem Hoover presents is they have four scorers, all averaging double digits this season. Granted that’s in the watered-down San Diego Section, but still, the Tarbabes will have to play consistent defense to keep anyone from getting hot. Angelo Choi, a 6-9 junior forward, is leading the team with 16 points and 13 rebounds a game. The top scorer is Dame Ndiaye, the other tower at forward, going 6-5 and hitting 16.4 a game. Eric Wells and Terrence Ingram provide the senior leadership, and the rest of the scoring, as the 6-foot seniors both average ten a game. If Compton can play the defensive game they’re capable of, they won’t need to ask 75 points of their trio. If one or two of the Cardinals get hot, it could be a quick ending to the Tarbabes’ state hopes.
