It’s something of a light week, as the city battens down the hatches in anticipation of next week’s CIF playoff onslaught, but as usual there’s still something fun to do or see in the city every day. Here’s a few suggestions—leave comments if you feel we left something out!
Tuesday there are some good basketball games, yes, but we’ll be at The Grand at 5pm covering the Century Club’s Annual Sports Banquet, the Oscars of the LB sports world. Tons of high school and collegiate athletes will be recognized, along with a few hard-working citizens (including this website!). This is a blast every year, a great night for Long Beach sports and, even better, all the proceeds go towards supporting athletics in Long Beach…which is obviously a good thing.
Wednesday we’ll be recording our podcast at The Beach Club in the afternoon, and then Lakewood and Wilson boys’ soccer will be tussling for second place in the Moore League at 3pm.
Thursday there are playoff implications everywhere, as seeds are up for grabs in girls’ soccer, girls’ water polo, and boys’ basketball. We’ll be enjoying the Millikan at Poly girls’ h20 polo game, then heading to Compton for a showdown between the Tarbabes’ and Jackrabbits’ boys’ basketball teams, the final game of the season being played between the first and second place teams.
Friday we were planning on telling you to check out Millikan/Wilson boys’ soccer, but with Wilson tying Lakewood and Millikan beating Poly on Monday, that games is all but meaningless. Instead, join us in the Pyramid for Long Beach State men’s volleyball as they host UC Santa Barbara at 7pm.
Saturday the LBSU women’s basketball team will host UCSB at 4pm in the Pyramid.
Sunday is the biggest day of the Winter sports season: CIF Playoff Bracket Day! Join us in the afternoon as we lay out the playoff path for Long Beach teams in boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, and girls’ water polo. Also my wife just reminded me it’s Valentine’s Day, so uh, you might want to remember that too.
