In twenty games spread over six days, beginning today at 4pm, the nation’s best high school baseball players will show off for a host of scouts and spectators. There’s a regrettable dearth of local players (nobody from Long Beach made the cut), but there will be plenty of big names spread out over the eight rosters. The relationship of showcasing to scouting is increasingly blurry in high school sports, and that’s certainly true at the Area Code games, where the managers of each team are listed in the roster as Coaches/Scouts—still, if you’re looking for high-quality prep baseball, this is likely the best venue in the nation for it, and it’s right in our backyard.
Former players in the games include Jered Weaver, Barry Zito, Troy Tulowitzki, Ryan Howard, and Albert Pujols—it’s likely one of the MLB’s future superstars will be at Blair this week; a one-day pass is $10, and an all-tourney pass is $25.
