Last week we brought you news that the Anaheim Ducks would be donating $1,000 per win to the Southern California Special Olympics—the good karma paid off, as the Ducks rattled off five straight victories before losing to Vancouver in a shootout tonight.  Well, it looks like Wal-Mart is looking to hop on board, too, as they’ve raised nearly a million dollars for California Special Olympics, with the money to be split between the northern chapter and the Long Beach-based southern branch.

More than 26,000 people with intellectual disabilities are involved in Special Olympics throughout California.  All programs are offered free to participants.  “Wal-Mart has gone above and beyond to ensure the success of the Golden Partnership campaign through its volunteers, contributions and outreach to their vendors,” said Bill Shumard, President & CEO, Special Olympics Southern California and ex-athletic director of Long Beach State.  “Wal-Mart’s ongoing support has provided essential resources so that persons with intellectual disabilities can realize the rewards of participating in sports.”
