Senior Janessa Martinez pitched a 1-hit complete game shutout, while striking out 13 batters over 7 innings in a victory over Lawndale in the 4th Annual Whittier Tournament played at East Los Angeles College. Junior outfielder Jacqueline Alvarez opened up the 3rd inning with a triple and scored two batters later on a base hit past a diving shortstop by Senior Elena Gutierrez. Lawndale threatened in the 5th and 7th innings but could not get a runner to third base. Cabrillo won 1-0.
With the victory, Cabrillo advanced to the consolation bracket championship where it beat Western Christian in extra innings again behind a spectacular performance by pitcher Janessa Martinez. Martinez, pitched 8 innings and allowed 2 unearned runs while striking out 11 batters. Junior shortstop Melina Rubio hit an inside the park homerun to drive in Jacqueline Alvarez in the top of the second inning. Western Christian tied the game in the fifth inning behind three hits and a Cabrillo error with bases loaded. Senior outfielder Elena Gutierrez scored the winning run in extra innings to give Cabrillo the consolation bracket championship, 3-2. This is the first trophy the Cabrillo softball program has earned in softball tournaments. Their record is now balanced at 7-7 on the season.
