Just heard from our good friends at Southern California Special Olympics (based out of Long Beach) that it’s that time of year again: the SOSC’s Plane Pull will be happening August 8 at the Long Beach Airport.  You may recall that yours truly pitched in on the SOSC’s team at the anchor position and popped his back pretty good (video below if you don’t believe me!).  I’ll be throwing in again along with plenty of other generous individuals—check out the press release below for more info on registering if you’re interested.  It’s free to come watch!

You and your friends or colleagues can flex your muscles and join in the 3rd Annual Plane Pull on Saturday, August 8, at Long Beach Airport.  Proceeds from this challenging event will benefit Special Olympics Southern California.

It’s “man vs. machine” as teams of 25 pull a FedEx Airbus 310 aircraft a total distance of 12 feet down the tarmac of Long Beach Airport. “This is the ultimate test of strength and endurance,” said Bill Shumard, President and CEO of Special Olympics Southern California.  “Teams of 25 people will play tug-of-war with the airplane, and the winners will receive bragging rights for a full year.”

Last year’s event raised $25,000 and this year’s goal is to raise $35,000. To help reach this goal, each team must raise a minimum of $1,000 to enter.  Individuals, or groups with less than 25 members, may participate for $50 per individual.

Law enforcement agencies, fire departments, as well as power lifters and body builders, private companies, colleges and the local community are welcome to compete.  The winners will receive prizes for fastest pull, slowest pull, and most creative team.

Teams or individuals should sign-up at www.socalplanepull.com.  Registration for teams, and team assignment for individuals, is also available the day of the event, beginning at 8:45 a.m.  Competition will begin at 10 a.m., and after all teams have exhausted their physical resources, participants will be treated to lunch.

The Plane Pull is sponsored by Tesoro Corporation (Elite Class Sponsor); Long Beach Airport and Long Beach Special Events and Filming (Presenting Co-Sponsors); California Highway Partrol; U.S. Bank; and Wescom Credit Union.
