Last summer, Poly football great and Super Bowl-winning Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Tony Hill was inducted into the Poly football hall of fame in its inaugural class. Now he’s coming back home to try and give back to the city and the school that gave him so much, throwing a star-studded charity basketball game on campus this Saturday, April 18th, to try and raise money for a student scholarship fund.
Hill, a Cowboy from 1977-1988, isn’t just honoring the school that gave him his start—the scholarship fund, the Leroy & Bernice Hill Academic Athlete Fund, is named in honor of his parents, both of whom are now deceased. “They both loved the academic side, as well as the athletic side,” says Hill.
Tickets to the game, which is on the Poly campus in the Ron Palmer Pavilion, will be $10, which will give you admittance to the game as well as a chance to win some autographed footballs from the contingent Hill is bringing out from Dallas. There will also be a raffle for a meet-and-greet postgame. “We’re trying to make it fun, as well as a great opportunity to raise money for the kids,” Hill says.
Among those playing will be Hill, as well as Dallas Cowboys Roy Williams (the receiver), Terrence Newman, Martellus Bennett, and Sam Hurd, all of whom Hill is bringing to Long Beach from Dallas. They’ll be squaring off against the Snoop Dogg All-Stars, a team that features Snoop, as well as Warren G, David Banner, Ricky Davis, and Mike Epps. Hill says this week they’ll have some more names to announce as the schedule and lineup are finalized.
The game starts at 7pm, but get there early if you’re interested, that amount and level of talent is sure to draw a crowd!
