Brian Reed’s goal last year was to grow the fledgling Tarbabes program—unfortunately, despite a league win over Cabrillo, he says the numbers haven’t grown this year. “And actually, I was coaching the JV team and the varsity team until just last week.” It’s a struggle that comes while building any program. “There’s so much negativity on campus about baseball and about the team, that they have to oversome,” says Reed. So the Tarbabes will continue to be the underdogs of the league in every game they play—but Reed has been aggressive in terms of schedule-making, playing eight games prior to the start of league play, the most in the last several years. They picked up three wins in that stretch, including two over Rolling Hills Prep on Saturday.
Sophomore captain Andy Ramirez will help determine which way the team goes, and Reed acknowledges he’s going to need some of his pitchers to really step up if they’re going to make waves in league. The Tarbabes list four members of their bullpen; junior Alberto Becerra, freshman Alvaro Perez, senior Rodrigo Estrada, and sophomore shortstop/pitcher Jesse Frausto, who will need to continue to show up at the plate for Compton as well. If Frausto and Ramirez can lead this team to some wins, Reed should find a little more help waiting in the wings next season.
