Junior pitchers Charlie Ruiz and Adam Wilk and senior pitcher David Born all were selected on day two of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.

Ruiz (San Leandro, Calif./Chabot College) was the first Dirtbag selected going in the 10th round, the 301st overall pick, to the Colorado Rockies. In his one season at Long Beach State Ruiz earned All-Big West Conference honors as a closer, holding the role for the entire season for the Dirtbags. Ruiz saved 11 of Long Beach State’s 25 wins this season, and struck out 42 batters in just 25 innings pitched.

Wilk (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS) was picked in the 11th round, the 330th overall pick, by the Detroit Tigers. A three-year letter winner with the Dirtbags, Wilk transitioned from the bullpen to a starting role for Long Beach State in 2009, eventually landing the Friday night ace’s spot, posting a 7-4 record and earning second-team All-Big West Conference honors as a starting pitcher. Wilk’s 2.78 ERA was third in the conference, and his 56 strikeouts and 94 innings pitched were both team highs.

Born (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento City College) was grabbed in the 22nd round, the 661st overall pick, by the Colorado Rockies. The left-handed pitcher played two seasons at the Beach appearing in 40 games. As a senior he finished with a 2-0 record and a 2.66 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched.

The three draft picks bring the number of Dirtbags drafted in the Mike Weathers era to 49. Twelve of those players have reached the majors and eight former Dirtbags are currently playing in the big leagues. The draft will finish on Thursday with 20 more rounds.
