10:00 | Millikan’s boys’ soccer team is generally regarded as the most physical in the league—unfortunately for the competition, they don’t give away much in the speed department to gain that advantage. On a muddy field, in the second game of a three-game week, their strength proved the key to winning a physical game against Jordan, 2-0. A narrow, muddy field made for a game with five yellow cards, to reds, a handful of injuries, and disjointed play.
Jordan’s keeper, Omar Castillo, performed heroically in the first half, deflecting two shots just wide, but with the Panthers unable to punch through the Millikan midfield, there wasn’t much he could do to hold back the tide. Ten minutes into the second half, Daniel Delgadillo sent a bouncing cross from outside the right edge of the Jordan box; it bounced over a Jordan defender, then took another two hops before reaching Robert Burgos, who punched it in. They added the insurance goal shortly before the game ended, when Ismael Ayala booted it in after the ball was touched by five separate players in the Jordan box. The win improves Millikan’s hold on first place, as they go to 5-0-2 in a brutal week that has them playing Wilson, Jordan, and Cabrillo within five days. Jordan falls to 2-3-1 and will have a hard road from here on out, with some tough road matches ahead.
“WE did not have as much energy in this game,” said Millikan coach Rod Petkovic. “It was an emotional game on Monday, on a muddy field. Today, it’s a bad field again, so I think they’re a little sore, a little worn down.”
