From LBSU reports
The Long Beach State women’s basketball team (3-12, 0-4 BWC) will take a break from Big West action as it heads to Cal State Bakersfield (9-7) on Tuesday, Jan. 13, for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt. The 49ers are looking to snap a season-long five-game losing streak. Head coach Mary Hegarty has announced they’ll be doing it without three of their starters, who are now (officially) redshirting: senior and three-time all-Big West selection Karina Figueroa, sophomore LaTorya Barbee and junior transfer Sahfiya Brown will all sit the rest of the year.
LBSU trails in its short series with CSUB by a 1-0 count. In the first-ever meeting between the two teams last year (Feb. 16, 2008), the Roadrunners pulled out a narrow 65-62 victory in Long Beach.
Cal State Bakersfield, which is in its second year at the Division I level, has been impressive at home this year with a 5-2 mark at the Icardo Center. In their last five home games, the Roadrunners are 4-1. On the season, senior Christine Kepenekian has paced CSUB with 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Senior Kelley Tarver (14.6 ppg) and junior Phynique Allen (11.5 ppg) are also averaging double figures for the Roadrunners. Senior Krista Arase, meanwhile, has been the guiding the offense with a team-high 4.3 assists per contest.
