
The 49ers scored two fourth-quarter goals to complete an overtime-forcing comeback, but UCSB locked them down in te extra period to win on Saturday, 8-5. Heather McKeon’s goal with 2:51 remaining in the fourth period tied the game.
Long Beach State got on the board first, scoring with 4:33 left in the first period as Krizia Cerda converted on a penalty shot after Gillian Morgan did not leave following an exclusion. The Gauchos evened the score with a 6-on-5 goal with 1:27 in the first.
The Gauchos took a 3-2 lead into the half after scoring two more 6-on-5 goals, and the team’s traded goals in the third as UCSB held on to a 4-3 lead.
A fifth 6-on-5 goal, Claire Buchanan’s third on the day put the Gauchos ahead 5-3. The 49ers pulled back one after Meaghan Leonard stuffed in a rebound with 4:30, and then McKeon tied the match to send the game to overtime.
The Gauchos controlled most of the possession in the overtime periods and earned the win with three goals, including two early in the second overtime period.
Long Beach State returns to the Campus Pool for their final regular season game, hosting No. 2 USC at Noon on Sunday, April 19. The 49ers will recognize their two seniors, Keala O’Sullivan and Kalina Houck prior to the game.
