Although they had several scoring opportunities, the Long Beach State women’s soccer team ended up with a double overtime scoreless tie against the UC Irvine Anteaters on Sunday afternoon at George Allen Field. It’s the second straight frustrating match for the team, as they’ve scored zero goals in the last two home games; it’s not inexplicable, as they’ve been missing some key offensive players, particularly Sahar Haghdan. With the tie, the 49ers moved to 8-4-3 overall with a 2-0-1 record in conference play. The Anteaters moved to 7-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference.
Long Beach State had several scoring opportunities that they couldn’t capitalize on. In the 15th minute Dana Farquhar shot a cross that got past the goalie, but Hayley Bolt missed the goal wide right. Kristen Kiefer had a couple of opportunities in the second half, one shot hitting the right goal post and another that was blocked in the 78th minute.
Long Beach State out-shot UC Irvine 24-8. Bolt and Kiefer each took six shots. Kim Silos took five. LBSU had 14 shots on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The 49er defense played strong for 110 minutes allowing the Anteaters to only take three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Liz Ramos had three saves in her sixth shutout of the season.
LBSU will return to action next Friday as they travel to UC Riverside to take on Highlanders at 6 p.m. They have only one remaining home game, on October 26th against CSU Northridge.
