The Long Beach State women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 55-54 victory over Idaho Sunday afternoon at Cowan Spectrum. With the win, The Beach improves to 2-4 on the season, while the Vandals fall to 2-5.

The game went down to the wire with seven tie scores and nine lead changes. LBSU was up 55-54 with 16 seconds left to play. After a timeout by Idaho, the Vandals were unable to convert and Rachele Kloke’s put back came after the buzzer, giving The Beach its second win of the season.

Freshman Adelle Walton led all 49er scorers with a season-high 11 points, while Lauren Sims chipped in 10, going 2-for-4 from beyond the arc. Junior Brett Timmons added a season-best performance with 10 points and nine rebounds.

LBSU dented the scoreboard first with a layup by Lynea Williams at the 17:33 mark. Idaho then took control, going up 14-6 before the 49ers responded with a 12-4 run to tie the game at 18-18. LBSU eventually regained the lead at 22-20 when Timmons scored with 2:45 remaining in the half. The Beach closed out the first period with a 5-2 spurt, capped by a Sims jumper at the buzzer to take a 27-22 advantage into the break.

After a trio of baskets by Williams, Walton and Timmons, The Beach held a six-point lead (36-30) early in the second half. The Vandals stormed back, however, tying the game at 36-36 after a jumper by Kloke.

The two teams then traded baskets until a Timmons jumper gave LBSU a 55-52 advantage with 1:15 left to play. The Vandals narrowed the gap to 55-54 after a layup by Yinka Olorunnife. After a missed jumper by Fields, Idaho got the rebound, but was unable to score before time ran out as LBSU held on for the 55-54 victory.

Olorunnife paced the Vandals with 20 points and 16 rebounds, while Kloke added 10 points.

Long Beach State will continue non-conference play on the road Friday (Dec. 12) when it heads to Big 12 foe Nebraska for a 5 p.m. (PST) game. The 49ers will then make their way to Arizona on Sunday, Dec. 14 where they will take on the Wildcats at 1 p.m. (PST).
