From LBSU reports
The Long Beach State women’s basketball team (3-13, 0-4 BWC) is looking to snap a six-game losing streak as the 49ers return to Big West Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 17, when they head to Cal State Northridge (3-13, 0-3 BWC) for a 4pm showdown.
Long Beach State leads in its all-time series with CSUN by a 28-10 count. The Beach snapped a three-game losing streak in the series after picking up a sweep last year, including a narrow 49-48 win at The Matadome (Feb. 23, 2008). LBSU is 10-4 when playing at Northridge.
In their most recent outing, the 49ers were unable to climb back from an early deficit in a 73-57 loss at Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday evening. Led by junior Whitney Fields’ career-high 16 rebounds, the 49ers owned a convincing 55-40 advantage on the boards, but the Roadrunners were able to counter that by shooting 38.2 percent from the field and holding The Beach to a 33.3 field goal percentage.
Senior Kaiti O’Brien paced the 49ers with her first double-double of the season as she tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Courtney Jacob added a team-high 11 points, while senior Lynea Williams chipped in 10.
After a 10-day layoff, Cal State Northridge returned to action on Wednesday, Jan. 14, when it dropped its third straight game with a 72-62 loss to UC Riverside. On the season, senior Whitney Ligon leads the Matadors with 11.2 points per game. Freshman Jasmine Erving has also made an immediate impact in her first year as she is tops on the team with 5.2 rebounds per game and ranks second on the squad with 8.2 ppg. Senior Tonicia Tademy, who poured in a career-high 24 points against the Highlanders, has been directing the offense with 5.8 assists per contest.
