From Reports By Long Beach State Sports Information Department

Three nights after the 49er offense put up 83 points in a win, the 49er defense gave up 83 points in a loss.  Junior Courtney Jacob scored a career-high 30 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Long Beach State women’s basketball team fell at Loyola Marymount, 83-63, Monday night at Gersten Pavilion.

Jacob went 10-for-18 from the field and 6-for-12 from behind the arc as she became the first 49er to score 30 points in a game since Glory Johnson accomplished the feat in 2003. Jacob added nine rebounds and six assists on the evening.

Junior Whitney Fields notched her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman Adelle Walton finished with six points, five rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Ashley Bookman added a career-high 10 boards.

Long Beach State (1-2) got off to a good start with Walton hitting a jumper on the opening possession. The two teams then traded baskets until LMU went on a 19-2 spurt to take a 36-17 lead. Fields’ jumper at the 6:29 mark ended a four minute scoring drought for the 49ers.

Jacob then caught on fire, pouring in 11 points over the final four minutes, as The Beach closed out the half on a 13-4 run. Although the 49ers had the momentum at the end of the period, they still trailed by 17 (49-32) at intermission.

The Lions (3-1) shot an impressive 51.2 percent from the field in the first half, while holding LBSU to 36.1 percent. LMU also had 22 points off of turnovers and 34 points in the paint as compared to the 49ers’ zero and seven, respectively.

LMU appeared to maintain control of the game after the break, going up 54-32 with 18:46 on the clock, but the 49ers started to chip away as they used an 11-2 run, capped by a pair of free throws from Lynea Williams, to cut the deficit to just seven (62-55) with 7:36 left to play. The Lions wouldn’t let The Beach get any closer, however, as they rebuilt their lead to double digits and held on for the win.

The Lions were led by a trio of players in double figures, including Lisa Helmers, who finished with 23 points. Alex Cowling had 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Cassady Moore chipped in 12.

Long Beach State will return to the Walter Pyramid on Monday, Dec. 1, when they host Portland State at 7 p.m.
