Long Beach State took an early 3-0 lead against Cal State Northridge, but the upset was not to be as the Matadors rallied to defeat the 49ers 11-4 Saturday.
Melissa Matheson scored on Long Beach State’s first possession, and the 49ers picked up goals from Courtney Elward and Katie Rogers in the first period to get out to the early lead. Cal State Northridge scored two goals in the final two minutes of the first period to cut the 49er lead to one before the second quarter.
Those two goals were part of eight straight for the Matadors, who took an 8-3 lead before Katie Rogers’ second goal cut the lead to four in the early minutes of the fourth quarter. Cal State Northridge scored three more times to account for the final score.
Heidi Pettinger scored three goals to lead the Matadors.
Long Beach State, after playing two matches at home, returns to the Campus Pool Sunday for a match with No. 2 Stanford beginning at Noon.
