
It was a great day for 49er leapers as juniors Alex Black and Tayler O’Connor both notched NCAA Regional qualifying marks in the high jump at the UCLA Invitational on Saturday.
Black won the men’s high jump, clearing a career-high tying and NCAA Regional mark of 6-10.75. In other field events, sophomore Rajan Bains was the 49ers’ top finisher in the shot put (50-06.00) and discus (158-07) as he finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Over on the track, freshman Matt Maldonado placed fourth in his first 800-meter run of the season, clocking in with a Big West qualifying time of 1:53.52.
O’Connor led the way in a 1-2 finish for The Beach in the women’s high jump. The San Mateo, Calif., native reached the NCAA Regional qualifying mark with a personal-record 5-08.75, while freshman Janelle Coulter rounded out the top duo, clearing 5-06.50.
Senior Jennifer Onyeagbako claimed the discus throw with a season-long distance of 162-00. Onyeagbako also took third in the shot put (45-01.00), while senior Katie Crowe added a third-place performance in the pole vault, tying her career best of 11-07.75.
Junior B.J. Triplett paced the women in the track events with a pair of top 10 finishes in the 100m (12.36) and 200m (25.08) dashes.
Long Beach State returns to action next weekend when it makes the short trip to Fullerton, Calif., for the Big West Challenge on Friday, April 10.
