Not that this will rock anyone’s world, but the dominant LBSU tennis program did what dominant programs do yesterday: they won a title, their fourth Big West title in the last five years. Long Beach State improved to 7-0 in Big West play as the 49ers defeated Pacific on the road 6-1. Hannah Grady defeated No. 84 Jenifer Widjaja to help key the win.
In a matchup between ranked opponents, No. 100 Hannah Grady outlasted No. 84 Jenifer Widjaja 7-5, 7-6 in a match that set the tone following a singles win behind victories from Deborah Armstrong and Lisa Sutton at No. 2 doubles and Anais Dallara and Rachel Manasse at No. 3 doubles.
In all, the 49ers would take the top five singles matches, as Manasse rebounded from a first set loss to win at No. 2 singles, and Armstong and Dallara rolled at three and four. Dallara’s win was the most impressive of the day, a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Clara Schumacher.
The Beach finishes Big West play at UC Davis tomorrow, and will then face two non-conference foes before playing the winner of the play-in match on Friday, April 17 at 9 a.m. in the first round of the Big West Tournament.
