Long Beach State’s first weekend of action continued with positive results, sending two doubles teams and Julie Luzar in singles to the semifinals on Saturday.
Luzar came away with a singles win in Flight C over Zalina Nazarova of Sacramento State, winning 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the finals, which begin Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. In back draw action, Jaklin Alawi picked up her first singles win of the year, defeating Alana McMahon of USF 6-4, 6-2, while Anna Jeczmionka and Deborah Armstrong each fell in two sets.
In doubles, the 49ers had another big day, Armstrong and Anais Dallara continued their run by defeating Carney/Hayasaka of BYU 8-3, and the mashup team of Alawi and Molly Aloia of St. Mary’s defeated Fresno State’s Modoc/Mikhavlova 8-5 to move into the semifinals.
The two teams then met on the same side of the draw, with Armstrong and Dallara outlasting Alawi and Aloia 9-7 to earn the trip to the finals in Flight B doubles. Jeczmionka and Luzar also had action in the same flight, falling in the consolation draw to Santa Clara’s Hoy/Zaniewski in a hard-fought 9-7 match.
