The Long Beach State softball team closed out the San Diego Classic II with a 2-0 victory over No. 25 Massachusetts Sunday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium.

The 49ers, who have won six of their last seven, improved to 14-13, while UMass dropped to 15-7.

Senior Ashley Levine was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while junior Casey Burba finished with two hits and an RBI. Freshman Caitrin DeBaun also went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Senior Bridgette Pagano was credited with the win, tossing four hitless innings of relief. Junior Brooke Turner started the game, scattering just three hits while striking out three.

The Beach dented the scoreboard in the second inning when DeBaun led off with a single through the right side. Alisha Rosen came in to pinch run and after Levine picked up her first hit of the day, Burba had an infield single and Rosen came around to score on a throwing error.

The 49ers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. DeBaun and Christina Schallig both walked before Levine singled to load the bases. With a full count, Burba then drew a two-out walk to plate DeBaun.

Long Beach State returns to action on Tuesday, March 23, when it plays host to Illinois-Chicago in a doubleheader beginning at noon at the 49er Softball Complex.
