In a down economy, new media outlets like twitter and Facebook are godsends for cash-strapped organizations, as they can amass great buzz at almost no cost—the Athletic Department at Long Beach State has certainly climbed on board, as they’re reaching out to younger fans via the social media sites.  Here’s the official release, including links to the new pages.

In an effort to continue to keep fans of the 49ers up to date with all of the latest news and notes surrounding The Beach, Long Beach State athletics has launched an active presence on Facebook and Twitter for the 2009-10 seasons. Both websites are free for users.

While being relatively new, Twitter will allow 49er fans to follow the day-to-day events of specific coaches and players involved in the program as well as events from the Athletic Department itself.

Twitter allows its users to send and read other users’ updates (known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. Updates are displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them either on a computer or cell phone.

News from the athletic department, men’s basketball coach Dan Monson, new women’s basketball coach Jody Wynn and several student-athletes are some of the 49ers who will use Twitter to keep fans updated in the upcoming year. Fans can receive updates through Twitter by following the directions below.

Facebook, the most-used social network, is also a social networking website that will allow users to become fans of Long Beach State Athletics and monitor day-to-day news and notes of The Beach.
