Long Beach State suffered a heart-breaking five set loss at the hands of the BYU Cougars in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in Utah Friday night, 30-22, 25-30, 28-30, 30-28, 15-7. The Beach is now 10-9 on the season and an even 7-7 in the conference.
The Beach fell behind early losing the first set, but rallied in the second to win decisively, holding BYU to a .077 hitting percentage and only 9 kills in the set. Long Beach rode that momentum to win the third set, but could not maintain the pressure and dropped the final two sets to lose the match in five.
Bittner finished the match with a team-high 27 kills and a .321 hitting percentage in the loss. Josh Riley added 15 kills, while freshman Jim Baughman chipped in 10 kills. Mike Klipsch finished with 60 assists and Dustin Watten had 11 digs.
The 49ers will face the Cougars again Saturday night in Provo with the game being broadcast live on BYU-TV which can be seen on both DirecTV and Dish Network.
