The Long Beach State men’s golf team recorded a total of 14-over par 590 on Monday at the Braveheart Classic to tie with Southern Utah for third place. The 49ers shot a 296 in the opening round at the Oak Valley Golf Club and came back in the second round to improve by two strokes for a score of 294.  Oregon currently leads the field of 18 teams as the Ducks scored a three-over 579 as they hold a comfortable 10-shot lead over second place Loyola Marymount (589).

Junior Michael Drake was the top individual for LBSU as he carded a two-over 146 as he shot a 73 in both rounds to finish tied for ninth with six other players.  Fellow classman Steve Gibson finished the day just two strokes behind as he shot a 79 in the opening round and came back with a three-under 69 for a four-over 148. Gibson is tied for 25th with five other players.

Freshmen Kevin Lim tied for 25th as he recorded a 75 and 74 for a five-over 149 while Kevin Roy tied for 32nd with a 69 and 81 for a six-over 150. Roy’s three-under 69 was the best score in the opening out of the 103 players competing in the UC Riverside tournament. Sophomore Ricky Montanez tied for 93rd with a 19-over 163 (85-78).

Final round action continues on Tuesday morning at 8am.
