The 49ers are having a great time in Hawaii, even if it is a working vacation—the team is in second, with two individuals tied for third at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate.  After the first day, the Long Beach State men’s golf team carded a three-under par 285 to finish in second place.  Playing on the par-72, 7,143 yard Arnold Palmer Course at the Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, Hawaii, the 49ers find themselves just seven strokes behind first place San Diego State, as the Aztecs leads the field of 12 teams with a 10-under 278.

The 49ers were led by senior Michael Drake and freshman Benjamin Lein as both players fired a two-under 70 to tie for third.  Drake, coming off from his individual championship at the Long Beach State hosted Del Walker Intercollegiate two weeks ago, played a bogey-free round with two birdies at the par-five Nos. 3 and 18 hole.  Lein, carded just one bogey and three birdies for the round, two of those birdies coming in on the last two holes.

Sophomore Kevin Roy also played an impressive opening round as he shot a one-under 71 to tie for ninth.  Roy carded three birdies and two bogey’s for the day.

Freshman Raymond Ho tied for 26th with a 74 and senior Steve Gibson tied for 38th with a 75.

Johan Carlsson of San Diego State sits on top of the leaderboard as he leads the field of 64 players with a five-under 67 and holds a one-shot lead over Alex Kang of San Diego State.
