Derek Wiebe-Bailey had 16 saves to lead the No. 8 Long Beach State 49ers to a, 7-6, victory over the No. 11 UC San Diego Tritons Friday night at the Long Beach State Campus Pool.
With the game tied, 5-5, late in the fourth quarter, The Beach’s Kevin Mundia scored from about 10 meters out on a tricky shot to put Long Beach State ahead for good.
Alexsandr Petrovic scored two goals for Long Beach State (8-8, 1-3) to lead the 49ers as The Beach had six different players score goals.
Trailing, 1-0, Taylor Clute scored the first goal for The Beach on a two on one fastbreak assist from Patrick van der Linde. Jeff Greenwood, currently the 49ers’ leading scorer, scored a goal in the second period along with Petrovic to give The Beach a lead they would never relinquish.
Justin Koeppen and Carter Taylor scored goals in the fourth quarter for The Beach.
Goalie Derek Wiebe-Bailey was dominant inside the goal using every piece of his body to record 16 saves.
The 49ers look to make it three wins in a row on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. against No. 4 UCLA at the 49 Campus Pool.
