The ‘Niners needed a win to get off the schneid in the MPSF, but it wasn’t likely to come against USC, the best team in the nation—and despite a valiant effort from oalie Derek Wiebe-Bailey (13 saves) no. 7 Long Beach State lost, 9-4.

Joe Sherrin scored a goal in the third period for the 49ers (6-8, 0-3) to make the score 5-3 before USC (17-1, 4-0) scored the next three goals to put the game out of reach. This was the second meeting between these two teams with USC winning the first game, 12-3.

Jeff Greenwood, Kevin Mundia, and Alexsandr Petrovic each scored goals to lead The Beach offensively.

Long Beach was trying to upset the top-ranked Trojans at home who have now won 36 straight games at McDonald’s Swim Stadium.

Shea Buckner had a game-high three goals while Anthony Artukovich and Kyle Sterling added two goals each for USC. Goalie Joel Dennerley had 12 saves for the Trojans.

Long Beach State’s will face UC Santa Barbara, in another MPSF match next week, for the first of six straight home games at noon on Saturday (Oct. 24).
