After being off the last two and half weeks, the Long Beach State men’s golf team gets back into action as they make the short drive down to south Orange Country as they take part in the Big West Conference Championship, May 3-4, at the Mission Viejo Country Club in Mission Viejo.
All nine teams from the Big West will compete for the men’s championship and the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament as Cal State Fullerton joins the competition this year. Seniors Robbie Berton, Steve Gibson, Michael Drake, sophomomore Kevin Roy and freshman Benjamin Lein will represent the 49ers in this year’s Big West Championship.
First and second round action is scheduled for Monday, May 3 with final round play concluding on Tuesday, May 4. Both days are scheduled for a 7:30 a.m. start. Live action can be followed on golfstat.com.
LBSU will be looking to improve from their fifth place finish at last year’s Big West Championship in San Luis Obispo, as the 49ers recorded a 54-hole total of 22-over 886, finishing 25 strokes behind team champion UC Davis.
The 49ers are coming off from an 18th place finish at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Northern California more than two weeks ago, where 20 teams competed at the Stanford Golf Course. LBSU recorded a three-round score of 890 (+50). Freshman Benjamin Lein was the top player for The Beach as he tied for 44th with a nine-over 219.
