The Long Beach State women’s golf team kicked off the spring season at the Peg Barnard Invitational with a 34-over par 318, finishing in ninth place in Saturday’s opening round at the Stanford Golf Course.
California leads the 11-team field as the Golden Bears recorded a 12-over 296 to hold a eight stroke lead over second place Stanford and Washington.
Sophomore Noelle Zavaleta led the 49ers with a six-over 77 to finish tied for 15th, while junior Lindsey McAtee finished one shot back with a 78 to tie for 21st.
Senior Brenda Chhuor tied for 29th with a 79 and freshman Simone Hoey tied for 52nd with an 84.
Playing in her first tournament for LBSU, sophomore Monica Villareal finished tied for 54th with a 14-over 85.
Pia Halbig of California sits on top of the leader board with an even-71 and holds a one stroke lead over second place Anya Alvarez of Washington.
Final round play concludes on Sunday at 8 a.m.
