After the first of three athletic seasons, here’s where the seven Moore League schools are sitting in our first-annual League Cup standings—since this is the first time we’re doing this, we’ll post the standings, and then a team-by-team breakdown of who got their points from where.  It’s remarkable how close the standings are at the top, and how close the balance was to shifting in a few different directions!  We hope this will be as fun a way to follow all the Moore League sports for readers as it has been for us so far…Keep your eye out for more Winter sports previews, and follow along in the next season to see who’s moving up, and who’s moving down!

If you missed it, click here for a full list of the rules of how we scored this–it’s really simple.  Points are awarded based on how each team finished the regular season in the league standings, plus a one point-bonus for each playoff win and an additional one-point bonus for a CIF title appearance (three more points if anyone wins a title, which didn’t happen in the Fall).  There’s a few other clarifications and fine points in the link if you’re interested!

LBPOSTsports Moore League Cup Standings: Fall 2009

Wilson: 47 points, four league titles (includes one point bonus for most league titles)

Poly: 45 points, two league titles, two CIF title appearances

Lakewood: 40 points, one league title

Millikan: 26 points

Cabrillo: 12 points

Jordan: 11 points

Compton: 8 points

A few interesting notes before we get into the team-by-team breakdown—Poly had the best postseason, with a win in football, two in girls’ volleyball, and one in girls’ tennis, as well as two CIF title appearances, with both boys’ and girls’ cross country teams qualifying for the CIF finals for just the third time in school history.  Lakewood was second best, with seven points gained in the postseason, keeping them competitive with Wilson and Poly despite those two schools winning more league titles.  Wilson’s boys’ cross country team was just three points shy of advancing to the CIF Finals, which would have given the Bruins an additional two-point cushion over the rest of the competition.

Postseason points earned

Poly: 8 points, two CIF title appearances

Lakewood: 7

Wilson: 5

Millikan: one point

The best-scoring teams for the Fall season were Lakewood football (league title and two playoff wins yielding nine points), Wilson girls’ volleyball (nine points from a league title and two playoff wins), and Poly boys’ and girls’ cross country teams (who both scored nine points by winning league titles and advancing to the CIF Finals).
