From LBCC reports

It was a tough opening to conference play for the Long Beach City College women’s tennis team, who opened up the 2009 South Coast Conference schedule with a 9-0 loss at home to Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday.  The loss dropped the Vikings to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the SCC. Mt. SAC improved to 3-4 and 1-0 in conference play.

Freshman Precious Labre at No. 2 singles suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Amanda Mullis in LBCC’s closest match. After dropping game one, Labre took the opening point in game two for a 1-0 lead but couldn’t hold on.

It will be a tough season of learning for head coach Jose Alavarez and his squad. LBCC carries an eight-member roster of all freshmen this year.  Prior to the start of the season, Alvarez lost his top three players from last year due to injuries and ineligibility. The list included 2008 SCC singles and doubles champions Courtney Petero and Kim Stern.

Long Beach returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 26) when it hosts El Camino College for a 2pm SCC match.
