From LBCC reports

Women

The Long Beach City College women’s water polo team will make its seventh consecutive trip to the state championships thanks to a second place finish at this past weekend’s Southern California Regional Championships at Golden West College.

Long Beach went 2-1 at the tournament. The Vikings opened tournament play with a thrilling 8-7 overtime win over Ventura. Then in the semifinals, LBCC pulled out an 8-7 win over South Coast Conference rival Cerritos to snap their 22-game winning streak and avenge a pair of losses earlier this season. LBCC closed the tourney with a 10-5 loss to defending state champion Riverside in the SoCal championship game.

The Vikings are the South’s No. 2 seed for this week’s California Community College Athletic Association Men’s Water Polo Championship at Merced College. The state tournament runs Thursday through Saturday (Nov. 20-22).

The Vikings take a 24-7 overall record to Merced and open state championship play on Thursday at 9 a.m. against North No. 3 Sierra. LBCC returns to the pool on Friday at noon to take on North No. 1 Santa Rosa.

A pair of wins would put the Vikings in the championship final on Saturday at noon. One win would put LBCC in the third-place game scheduled for 9 a.m.

LBCC went 2-1 this season against Sierra and defeated Santa Rosa in their lone meeting this year. Overall, the Vikings have compiled a 4-7 record against the state tournament field (2-1 Sierra, Santa Rosa 1-0, Riverside 0-3, American River 0-1, Cerritos 1-2).

Long Beach looks to capture its fourth state championship overall and first since 2006. Last year, the Vikings finished third. Coaches Chris Oeding and Dave Kasa have complied six straight final four showings at the state tournament and won championships in 2003, 2004, and 2006.
