Women’s Soccer: Cerritos 3, Long Beach 0

The Long Beach City College women’s soccer team fell 3-0 to visiting Cerritos College on Friday in a South Coast Conference game at LBCC.

The loss dropped Long Beach to 3-1 in conference play and 6-4-1 overall. Cerritos, ranked No. 6 in the nation, improved to 10-1 and 3-1 in the SCC.

Cerritos scored all three of its goals in the first half. Thirteen minutes into the contest, Ruby Leon put the Falcons on the scoreboard with her goal off the pass from Viridiana Ortega.

Jessica Ortiz had an unassisted goal in the 19th minute and Nancy Gandarilla made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute with her breakaway goal after a pass from Tatiana Cortes.

LBCC turned up the pressure in the second half, but couldn’t crack the Cerritos defense. The Falcons went on to outshoot the Vikings by a 20-5 margin.

Cerritos’ Erika Trejo and Laura Ropp (3 saves) combined for the shutout. Sophomore Ileana Aparicio totaled eight saves in goal for Long Beach.

Long Beach returns to action next Wednesday (Oct. 13) when it hosts East Los Angeles College in a 2 p.m. SCC game. 

Men’s Soccer: Cerritos 3, Long Beach 0

The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 South Coast Conference loss to visiting Cerritos College on Friday at LBCC.

The loss dropped Long Beach to 4-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play, while No. 4 nationally-ranked Cerritos improved to 9-1-1 and 3-1-0 in the SCC.

After a scoreless first half, Cerritos finally got on the scoreboard in the 54th minute. A penalty kick was called after Cerritos’ Luis Gonzalez was taken down by LBCC defender Phillip Regaldo inside the box. Gonzalez took the PK and placed his shot in the lower left corner of the goal past LBCC keeper Luis Romero to give the Falcons the 1-0 advantage.

Cerritos broke the game open in the 76th and 77th minute when Salvador Melendrez (2 goals) and German Rivas (2 assists) connected for back-to-back scores.

Romero posted four saves in goal in the loss while Cerritos goalkeeper Danny Lizama needed to make just one save.

LBCC returns to action next Wednesday (Oct. 13) when it travels to East Los Angeles College for a 4 p.m. conference game.
