The Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team returned to the win column after its three-game sweep of visiting Grossmont College in a non-conference match at LBCC on Wednesday night.
The Vikings bounced back from last week’s 3-0 loss to Orange Coast by defeating Grossmont by scores of 30-20, 30-14, and 30-20 to improve to 4-1 overall.
Long Beach went on early big runs to put each set out of Grossmont’s reach.
In set one, Grossmont took an early 3-0 lead before Long Beach responded with nine unanswered points behind the serving of freshman Rob McLean.
Set two was more of the same. Trailing 1-0, McLean served the Vikings to a 6-0 run and LBCC was up 12-4 before a Grossmont timeout.
LBCC built a commanding 14-6 advantage in set three before Grossmont rallied back to get within four points at 19-15. But Long Beach outscored Grossmont 11-4 the rest of the way and got a pair of kills from freshman Randy Preval and a kill from sophomore Torand Cheltenham to close out the match.
McLean led LBCC with 10 kills while freshman Dago Jimenez added nine kills and four digs. Freshman Chris Austin had eight kills to go with 16 assists and two aces.
The Vikings totaled seven blocks on the night, with Preval leading the way with four blocks to go with seven kills. Cheltenham posted three blocks and also chipped in with six kills and two aces.
Kyle McDonald led Grossmont (2-3) with 12 kills and Sezar Dundar posted 28 assists.
Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Feb. 19) when it travels to San Diego City College for a 6 p.m. non-conference match.
