
Long Beach City College freshman forward Lane Whitney poured in 16 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings lost to Mt. San Jacinto College on Tuesday night by a final score of 76-58, in their opening-round game at the Wells Fargo Classic tournament at Riverside Community College.
The loss dropped LBCC to 4-5 on the season while Mt. San Jacinto, ranked No. 13 in Southern California, improved to 7-4. The Vikings shot just 9 for 32 (28 percent) in the first half and trailed 38-20 at the break. LBCC bounced back to shoot a respectable 16-31 (52 percent), but the Eagles’ first-half lead was insurmountable.
Whitney added four rebounds and two steals to his team-high 16 points, and sophomore guard Randolph White posted 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Long Beach returns to tournament action in Riverside on Thursday when it will face East Los Angeles College at 12 p.m.
