3:40pm | You can always tell the quality of a city’s athletes by the polls that are released, and this week Long Beach didn’t disappoint as several teams were ranked in the Top Ten of several different sports.
Wilson High is making plenty of noise in the Boys Water Polo rankings, coming in at No. 2 behind only Murrieta Valley in the Division 2 polls. The Bruins fell last week to Los Alamitos (No. 6 in Division 1) but followed it up with a 12-11 win over Servite (No. 10 in Division 1). The Bruins host Bonita (No. 5 in Division 5) today at the Belmont Pool.
Two familiar names face off this week when Poly and Lakewood will battle for Moore League supremacy. No, not in football, but girl’s volleyball, where Long Beach Poly comes in at No. 2 and trails only Harvard-Westlake in the Division 1-AA poll. Meanwhile, Lakewood makes a strong showing at No. 6 and will have a huge chance to gain ground today, as the two teams square off. Wilson also earned an Honorable Mention in the poll.
The roles are reversed for football, where Lakewood remains at No. 3 in the PAC-5 Division while Poly jumps up two spots to No. 8 after both teams scored convincing wins over Compton and Jordan, respectively, to open Moore League play last week. Like in girl’s volleyball, a lot is at stake this week as the Lancers and Jackrabbits will meet on the gridiron at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 7:00pm this Friday.
