Greg Mellen at the PT reported over the weekend that the ambitious Kroc Center we told you about last week—a multi-sport facility that would benefit all of Long Beach, but especially the 6th District—has cleared another hurdle. The project’s Environmental Impact Report has been officially certified by the Planning Commission, and it’s been recommended for city approval. The only things standing between the plans and their completion are the City Council’s approval, and a whole lot of money.
As Theo Douglas at the District pointed out, how much money is up for debate. We were told when the project was announced that it was $17 million from starting construction—the Salvation Army’s Glen Madsen says that number is $25 million. We’re unclear as to the cause of the discrepancy, or where Snoop Dogg’s $5 million in-kind donation falls into the matter, but we’ll certainly keep you posted as things progress. One thing is for sure: the project seems to have the support of the Planning Commission, and the city, and that can’t be a bad thing.
