Following the All-City Football Championships (click here for the recap and photos from the football action), attention turned to the Wilson gym for the Division I & II All-City Volleyball Championships.  Cubberley and Hughes had to wait a year to avenge last year’s All-City losses to Div. II champ Colin Powell and 5-time defending Div. I champion Stanford—but their patience paid off, as they took home the titles.

In the Division 1 game, Hughes was hoping to avenge their loss to the Stanford Hawks; this year, the Owls earned their way into the title game with a sweep of Stanford.  There, they faced Rogers, who swept Bancroft to earn a seat at the championship table.

The opening frame was hard-fought and went to Rogers, 25-21; when they took a 25-15 win in the second set, things appeared to be headed the Mustangs’ way.  But Hughes stole momentum back with wins in the third and fourth set, forcing the crowd to stand in anticipation of a dramatic fifth set, which the Owls took 15-9 to complete the incredible comeback.

In Division II, it was the story of another team trying to avenge last year’s result, as Cubberley swept Lindsey to make it to the title match.  The Cubs were feeling fired up after their football team won the Division II title earlier in the day, but they were facing a tough test in Hudson, who earned their way into the game with a sweep of Burcham.

Cubberley and Hudson battled on every single point in the Opening game with the Cubs squeaking out a narrow 26-24 victory.  The Cubs kept the pressure on as they put away a very talented Hawks squad in 3 straight to win the Division II All-City Championship, completing a Cubberley sweep of the day, as the Cubs took both Division II titles.

Congrats to all the great athletes and coaches—for those who choose to continue their athletic careers, we look forward to seeing you in high school in a few years!
