The Wilson Bruins were successful taking the Poly Jackrabbits out of their offense Friday evening, but the ‘Rabbits were still good enough to get by, winning 55-33 to improve to 2-0 in Moore League play. After their tough loss to Millikan on Wednesday, the Bruins are now 0-2.
The Jackrabbits sprinted out to a 14-4 lead in the first, behind strong performances from Brittany Wilson and Monique Oliver, who combined for 11 in the opening period, including five free throws from Oliver (she was 6-for-8 on the night). Then in the second, the Poly offense stalled, as the Bruins moved to a collapsed zone that forced Poly to take a lot of perimeter shots, which weren’t falling—Poly scored just seven points in the second, to Wilson’s five. “Moore League teams know you as well as you know yourself,” said Poly coach Carl Buggs after the game. “They forced us to take outside shots, and we weren’t hitting them. We need to be more patient, and not have our guards just sit back.”
In the second half, Poly scored 33 (compared to just 22 in the first half), and held the Bruins to 19 en route to the victory. Leaders for the ‘Rabbits were Oliver, with 14, and Brittany Wilson, with 13—Thaddesia Southall also contributed with ten second-half points. For the Bruins, it was Tiffany Baily with nine, and Ciarra Ford with six. Poly’s next game will be on the road Monday in the hostile Millikan gym, for a rematch of last year’s upset. The Bruins will host Cabrillo.
