Men’s Basketball in the ‘Myd draws big crowds and a big student section. The students’ role in the game is obvious: scream, cheer, and dance around for the Beach; heckle the other team mercilessly. Lord help the poor opposing player who throws an airball, because he will be reminded of this fact every time he touches the ball.
Men’s Volleyball is a little different. The arguable analog to the airball (the service error) happens with such frequency, and to both teams, that students often have to find another door by which to get into an opposing player’s head. Last Friday, when the men played UCSD, a player had the mock-worthy habit of rolling up his sleeves before every serve. Things like that. This Friday, when the men took on UCI for a disappointing four set loss, attention was turned to this guy:
At 6’7”, Jon Stellar is one of the tallest guys on the UCI squad. At a full twelve inches above the knee, his shorts definitely led the team in leg display.
We knew it was a good day to be in the ‘Myd when every time #1 stepped back to serve, the students chanted “Shooooort shorts! Shoooort shorts!” But the true Heckle O’ The Game has to go to whoever it was that shouted: “Obama hates you!!”
I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure Beach got a side-out.
