If you’re a sportswriter, coach, or athlete in Long Beach, you’re finding yourself with some unexpected free time. Like everything else in Long Beach, sports schedules have been submerged in a wash of unexpected flooding.
Obviously, all soccer games this week are likely cancelled—so far the girls’ games on Tuesday and the boys’ games on Wednesday are down, but we’d be very surprised if Thursday or Fridays games were played.
On the basketball side, Poly’s boys’ and girls’ games against Cabrillo on Wednesday were both cancelled due to the flooding on the Westside. Cabrillo girls’ coach Karen Candelaria said there was severe water backup at the school’s entrances and exits, and the principal decided to err on the side of caution and cancel the games. That game, as well as the soccer games, will be postponed to a later date, most likely next week (the rain is supposed to abate Saturday).
Things even got so bad, they’re canceling water sports, as Wilson’s girls’ water polo game at the Belmont on Tuesday was canceled. Additionally, LBCC cancelled Wednesday night’s basketball games because of the difficulty in reaching the school thanks to flooding.
