Looking to continue to separate from the pack and inch closer to Poly at the top of the standings, the Millikan Rams took care of business at home against the visiting Wilson Bruins, who were just one game behind the Rams coming into Thursday afternoon. The Rams won 48-36, staying with one game of Poly and creating a two-game separation between themselves and the rest of the league—Poly is 7-0, Millikan is 6-1, and Wilson is now 4-3.
It was an even contest for most of the game, before Millikan pulled a repeat performance of their first comeback win over Wilson in the season opener, by completely taking over for the final six minutes of the ball game. It was 22-22 at halftime, but Millikan began to pull away in the third—a Jaslyn Cosey buzzer-beater layup to give them a six-point advantage headed into the fourth was all they’d end up needing. In the fourth quarter Ashley Mitchell came alive with two crucial three-pointers for the Rams, and a 9-2 run propelled them to the victory. Leaders for Millikan were Mitchell, with ten points, and Cosey, who led all scorers with 14. Wilson’s leading scorer was Ciarra Ford, who had 13, and Tiffany Bailey with 9.
“It was just a complete failure to execute down the stretch,” said Wilson coach Byron Ferguson. “Again.”
“We had to win this game,” said Millikan’s head coach Lorene Morgan. She pointed out that was not only to stay paced with Poly, but because of the playoff seeding implications involved. Morgan is satisfied with how her team’s Achilles heel has come along—”The rebounding is progressing. We’ve spent a lot of time working on it. They work hard out there because they don’t want to run 30 suicides in practice the next day.”
