We don’t like writing ink blotter stories on a sports site, but we promised to keep you updated on the cautionary tale that former Lakewood running back Jerry Stone has become; Stone will now be tried by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office as an adult.  Stone’s arraignment had faced two continuations while the DA’s office made their decision, and he is currently being held on bail in excess of $2 million.

The LA Times reported last week that Stone, 17, will face two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of permitting another to shoot from a vehicle, one count of permitting a loaded firearm in a vehicle, one count of residential first-degree burglary and one count of hit-and-run.  He will be charged with two counts of attempted murder, as well.

For anyone who hasn’t realized the severity of what one afternoon’s dangerous actions can bring, consider: Stone, had he gone straight home after football practice two months ago, would be reveling in the joy of beating Long Beach Poly with his teammates, and perhaps deciding between Pac-10 scholarship offers.  Instead, he awaits trial in adult court with incredibly serious charges being brought against him, while being held on multi-million dollar bail.

We won’t report news on this story, or mention it again, until something further happens in court—but of course we urge anyone reading this story to take Stone’s story as what it is: the saddest kind of cautionary tale.
