“It never ends,” said Lakewood football coach Thad MacNeal on Thursday, when we called to see how Fall scheduling was going for them (Lakewood has scheduled Bosco and Mayfair so far, and are still looking for two other games). Football season is technically over, but it’s not OVER over, as Jesse Scroggins, Dion Bailey, and Justin Utupo will all find themselves playing in All-American games in January.
Scroggins will be in the Under-Armour High School All-American game in Florida, which will be aired on ABC live on Saturday, January 5th. He’ll be joined by coach MacNeal, who will be running the offense under former NFL coach Sam Wyche. MacNeal says the Lakewood entourage will fly out on December 27th. “It’s great,” he said. “My whole family gets to go—they’re giving us all passes to Walt Disney World.” Since coaches work long hours for negligible pay, it’s safe to say a family vacation to Florida will serve as a nice Christmas bonus.
Bailey and Utupo will be in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl on January 2nd, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They’ll be on a team representing the West as our half of the United States tries to get their first win against the East in the game’s three-year history.
