Five local high school football teams lost, while one of the victorious teams came away with a Milk Bucket and the other gets to start preparing for Mission Viejo. The Moore League took a bitter pill this week.
First, the spoonful of sugar.
The Lakewood Lancers continued to look like the most polished team in the Moore League – albeit not without imperfection – in a 24-14 victory over vaunted rival Mayfair for the right to hoist the lovely Milk Bucket. Click here to read our game report from contributor Julio Nievas.
Long Beach Poly needed a turnaround after an unlikely loss to St. Bonaventure last week. Of course, it wasn’t so much the loss as the fact that they were dominated by the Seraphs on their home field, so everyone’s eyes were on the Jackrabbits this week to see how they’d bounce back at Narbonne. It went down to the wire, but Poly pulled out the proverbial rabbit with a 23-20 victory. They’ll face off next week against Mission Viejo, a team that’s averaging 49.0 points per game is clearly one of the Top 5 teams in the state.
Now, the medicine.
The bad part about winning is that it doesn’t last forever, and that’s what the Cabrillo Jaguars learned in their 40-6 home loss to North Torrance on Friday night. After the jubilation of earning their first win since 2007 last week, the Jaguars were thoroughly outplayed in the loss. No need to panic, there’s plenty to work with. After starting off the season with a couple of impressive wins, people started to take notice of the Compton Tarbabes. Unfortunately for them, so did the Dominguez Dons, who blanked the visiting Tarbabes, 14-0. Holding the Compton offense scoreless is about as easy as holding the Lakers scoreless, so this either speaks volumes about the effectiveness of their Wing-T offense or about the Dominguez defense. We’ll see if the ‘Babes get back into top gear against Dorsey next week before they open the Moore League season with Lakewood.
Wilson ran into a buzzsaw at La Serna, who simply opened up the Bruin defense and jumped out to a 48-0 lead before a few touchdowns made the final a respectable 48-21. Yes, the loss was bad, but remember that this is a team nurturing a new offense and a new defensive coordinator. Plus, with games against Edison last week and La Serna tonight, you’ve gotta believe that Wilson will be battle-tested when Moore League play begins.
Jordan‘s story is almost the same as Compton’s. The Panthers made their way into a mention in the PAC-5 Division polls this week, but waltzed their way right out of a repeat with a 20-14 double overtime loss to Warren tonight. There’s still a lot to learn about this team since they’ve only played two games, so next week’s contest will be a great barometer as they face off against the very team that beat Compton tonight.
And of course, you know that Millikan lost 28-7 to Redondo Union on Thursday night because you already watched our highlight video. The Rams will battle Fountain Valley next week.
